The Hurting Dark

Original Short Film

Collaboration with other Tanzanian Creatives

March 2021

This is a short story mirroring the reality of many relationships in our communities. But unlike many stories, Anitha was able to escape from her abuser and seek help from the people closest to her and professionals who can help counsel her. Many of us may know someone who is in an abusive relationship, whether it be physical or emotional abuse. Let us not turn a blind eye. Let them know that if they can survive inside an abusive relationship then they can survive outside of it.

Original Short Story

Reenactments

Hidden Figures

Fences

Blood and Water

American Gods

And Many More

Movie and Series Reenactments of actresses like Taraji Henson, Viola Davis, Scarlette Johansson and many more continue to raise the bar for Mariam and improve her acting skills. The characters in the scenes have very powerful and emotional messages to deliver. Reenactments have taught Mariam the ability to deliver powerful messages with clarity and intense emotions and memorisation.

TEDxALC Talk

Poo and Taboo; The Shit That Actually Matters

2019

Mariam devised a talk about the importance of overcoming assumptions and facing our societal taboos. Societal taboos which are holding many back and creating multiple critical issues. Mariam believes every solution comes from having a simple conversation about the problem, however, not many have the chance to start these crucial discussions. This is why Mariam aims to be a voice for all things 'taboo' that could be hindering a better way of living.

ASHA

Played as one of the Queen's handmaidens in the play, 'Asha',  which is about Women in leadership and power dynamics within the society.

ASHA taught Mariam the importance of being content with the character, one receives, whether it is a role with multiple lines, just a few or none. Every character has their place in a

play and a moment or two to shine on stage.

What matters is how an actor portrays the character rather than the title of character. Main role or not, an actor should always put their best foot forward and deliver to the audience. This is definitely what Mariam lives by.

2020

AIDA

Played Aida, a Nubian Princess taken into slavery to become the Queen's maiden. Aida was loving, vulnerable and fierce.

This was Mariam's first time to play a character that is mostly terrified and vulnerable on stage. It taught her the art of not only studying a character but the context of the play in order to tap into these

deep emotions.

The musical aspect of the play pushed Mariam to learn how to sing high notes whilst not losing the movement required on stage.

2018

Once On

This Island

Played Andrea Deveraux, a rich, entitled and fierce young lady who is betrothed to a man only for him to love another woman.

As the first musical to have ever been apart of, Mariam learnt the skills of voice and movement control while on stage. Hours of tireless work did not demotivate her, rather she fell in love with the art and never turned back.

2015

Sarafina

Played both Sarafina (for a scene) and the main policeman who was infuriated and strict throughout the play.

Mariam gladly took up the challenge of playing two roles as a way to broaden her skills and learn the skill of flexibility and getting into character as fast as possible.

2016

CATS

Played the role of Grizabella, a glamour cat that was mostly sad and reminiscing about the good old times. The most famous song known sang by her is 'Memory'.

Acting as an animal was definitely not something Mariam had ever done at the time and embodying both the character's trait and cat like movement transformed her idea of performance as a theatre actress.

Next  Steps

Mariam's ultimate goal is to build a successful career as a creative artist. She aims to embody fierce characters that deliver powerful messages to the world. She currently works on her own individual and collaborative creative projects so as to broaden her portfolio. She has worked on singing, scriptwriting, acting and voiceover projects.

Mariam's bigger dream is to be able to build a large network in the entertainment industry that will help her create platforms that young talented Tanzanians can rely on to build a successful career in the entertainment industry.
